ANDREW Ettingshausen is back at Cronulla.
After more than six months of trying to persuade him to join a new-look Cronulla board, the Sharks icon has instead returned in a coaching capacity.
Ettingshausen, who scored a club record 165 tries for the Sharks, has taken up an offer from coach Ricky Stuart to work one-on-one with the outside backs.
His involvement continues a cultural shift at Cronulla after former president Peter Gow put aside 10 years of animosity last week in a bid to help out the club in its financial battles.
"They've got some young backs coming through and I like what Ricky is doing by blooding these young players,'' Ettingshausen said. "From what I've seen already, there's some raw talent there.''
It's the first time in four years that Ettingshausen has been involved with the club. He was a defensive assistant to former head coach Stuart Raper in 2005.
Ettingshausen will be on-call for Stuart as he juggles his television career, three businesses and prolonged periods away from home. The former Test flyer received a phone call from Stuart last week after he was told Ettingshausen was eager to get back involved with the club.
The former World Cup-winning team-mates spoke for almost 45 minutes before Stuart extended an offer to Ettingshausen. The Sharks coach compiled a video package of games for Ettingshausen to pore over.
"I thought there were some really good signs,'' Ettingshausen said after watching the 13-10 win against Parramatta. "Aside from the win itself, which was just fantastic for the club and the supporters, there seems to be something there to work with.
"The fullback (Nathan) Stapleton did some things that, off the ball, were of the highest order. He's a talent. Blake Ferguson also. He is a big winger, who I think will only develop with the experience.''
After a week watching video, Ettingshausen said his first task was to understand the Sharks' backline "inside and out''.
"What I didn't know about them before, I certainly will soon,'' he said. "I'm loaded up with plenty of footage on my computer and I'll analyse that footage before I sit down with Ricky to discuss what's required. It will be totally up to `Sticky'.
"I've always said I wanted to help the club where they need me. It's just been that a combination of time and wanting to be of worthwhile assistance.''
