I deal with someone fairly regularly who prefers they over gendered pronoun and I try and use it for them. Minimal effort on my part, doesn't harm me. They never say anything when I get it wrong.
A lot of the outrage is overblown by very small vocal minorities. And the news ****ing feast on that. One person tweets they think a book should be banned and the news run with it and a bunch of people get all upset 'certain demographic' want to change their way of living.
I think we don't realise how much we tailor our interactions with others a lot though, we just aren't as used to doing it in these ways.
Someone says why should I call this person they just because they want me to and then calls their mate **** but their boss sir.
It is a bit of an adjustment like you say, but mostly pretty low impact. Low enough not worth worrying about whether you 'agree' with it or not.
